چکیده

Biological systems can generally adapt environmental changes and to create symbiotic relationship with other species, by changing their intra-cellular states flexibly. However, the mechanisms for such flexible adaptation and creation of symbiotic relationship remain unclear. In this study, by using simple computer models of cells, we show that for cells whose gene expression fluctuate stochastically, the adaptive cellular state is inevitably selected by noise, even without sophisticated mechanisms. Furthermore, by the fluctuation-induced adaptation mechanism, we show that symbiotic relationships naturally appear in systems of interacting cells. This mechanism can provide clues to understand flexible adaptation and creation of symbiotic relationship. Applications of this mechanism for designing artificial systems are also discussed.

Iranian EFL Learners’ Motivational Fluctuation in Task Performance over Different Timescales

Motivation for learning a new language is both self and time-oriented. The language learner’s motivation experiences gradual fluctuation over time and the view of oneself is different on each timescale of the study. Interaction among different timescales throughout the Second Language Development (SLD) is a novel area of investigation (de Bot, 2015). In order to probe this interactive nature, t...

It from Bit: Cellular Automata, Driven Ising Model, and Emergent Computation

We explored emergent computation within two systems — cellular automata (CA) and a driven Ising model. We attempted to generate emergent computation with a CA using a genetic algorithm, with the aim of understanding general conditions on information processing dynamics which increase computational capacity. Specifically, we aim to search the space of CAs to identify minimal computational units,...

Multi-gene analysis of Symbiodinium dinoflagellates: a perspective on rarity, symbiosis, and evolution

Symbiodinium, a large group of dinoflagellates, live in symbiosis with marine protists, invertebrate metazoans, and free-living in the environment. Symbiodinium are functionally variable and play critical energetic roles in symbiosis. Our knowledge of Symbiodinium has been historically constrained by the limited number of molecular markers available to study evolution in the genus. Here we comp...

Fluctuation-driven dynamics of the internet topology.

We study the dynamics of the Internet topology based on empirical data on the level of the autonomous systems. It is found that the fluctuations occurring in the stochastic process of connecting and disconnecting edges are important features of the Internet dynamics. The network's overall growth can be described approximately by a single characteristic degree growth rate g(eff) approximately 0....

The Impact of Structural Heterogeneity on Excitation-Inhibition Balance in Cortical Networks

Models of cortical dynamics often assume a homogeneous connectivity structure. However, we show that heterogeneous input connectivity can prevent the dynamic balance between excitation and inhibition, a hallmark of cortical dynamics, and yield unrealistically sparse and temporally regular firing. Anatomically based estimates of the connectivity of layer 4 (L4) rat barrel cortex and numerical si...
